Gingival abscesses occur when there is an accumulation of bacteria and food by-product that is stuck to your teeth. When you don't brush as diligently as you should, the bacteria starts to build up on your gums and forms small pus pockets. Yuck! Gingival abscesses do more than just cause you discomfort. If you don't take care of the abscess immediately, it could lead to a multitude of other dental issues. You don't have to suffer the pain while waiting for a visit to your dentist because there are two common home ingredients that can do the trick for you.

Apple Cider Vinegar

If you are like most people, the thought of putting apple cider vinegar in your mouth may disgust you. However, this small and often overlooked ingredient has many healing properties. Apple cider vinegar can help pull out the pus and bacteria that is stockpiled on your gums. This ingredient can also help with the pain and swelling around your gums and the infection site.

Step One: Warm four tablespoons of apple cider vinegar on the stove or in your microwave.

Step Two: Gargle with the warm apple cider vinegar for two minutes, in the morning and before you go to bed.

It is important to remember to brush your teeth after you have gargled with this solution, as apple cider vinegar can cause damage to your teeth if left on for too long.

If you do not like the idea of gargling with apple cider vinegar, you can also soak the warm solution in a cotton ball and apply it to your gums for two minutes. This route will work just as well.

Olive Oil

Another solution, and probably just as seemingly unappetizing, is to use olive oil. Olive oil is used around the house as a natural solution for several things, and, luckily for you, treating gingival abscesses is one of them. A main chemical that is found is olive oil is called eugenol. This chemical literally kills off the bacteria that likes to cling onto your tongue and gums, the same bacteria that causes an abscess. Olive oil is also a double threat, because it can reduce the amount of swelling and discomfort you are experiencing.

Step One: Warm two tablespoons of olive oil on your stove or microwave.

Step Two: Soak a cotton ball in the solution until it is saturated.

Step Three: Apply the cotton ball directly to your gums for five minutes.

You can use this solution whenever you begin to feel pain in the infected area because olive oil is natural and safe to use.

Gingival abscesses are nothing to play around with because they can lead to pain and other dental issues. By using one of the natural solutions that are listed above, your mouth will not only heal in a timely fashion, but you will also be able to heal with minimal discomfort and swelling.
